I would like to discuss one topic which is very common yet neglected. So, today we will be discussing about Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP).

many questions arise in our minds like:

How to take mifepristone and misoprostol ?

All common questions asked frequently recent years, I will answer you these all in this blog . Along with it, we will discuss MTP pills, all their possibility, cons, and everything else.

When should we take MTP pills?

How to take MTP pills?

What should be observed and expected?

The mechanism of action of mifepristone is to act against the hormone name progesterone, resulting in the fall of hormone levels. It is a progesterone antagonist, which results in failure of pregnancy and abortion of the fetus.
After taking Mifepristone, there is no symptoms. Rarely, there can see mild stomach upset, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms remain hardly for 24 hours and subside on their own.

Then comes Misoprostol—the 4 tablets taken on day 3.

Misoprostol starts uterine contractions and increases uterine motility.
As the contractions start and increase, this causes heavy bleeding and pain.
Pain and bleeding can start anywhere within 30 minutes to 4 hours.
If there is no bleeding even after 24 hours, then it indicates that the medicine didn’t work.
Bleeding is heavy for the first 3–4 hours and then decreases gradually.
Pain is severe for 2–3 hours and then reduces.

I advise pain killers with these tablets.

You can take any pain killer that suitable for you.
Pain killers do not affect the abortion process at all.

Heavy bleeding
Severe pain
Mild fever
Diarrhoea
Weakness and fatigue

These all symptoms last hardly for 24 hours and subside once the tablet is metabolised.

Precautions before taking MTP pills:

Bleeding happens for 3-4 days, then gradually settles.

In emergencies, don’t wait for 14 days. Report immediately if:
1. Severe pain not relieved by painkillers
2. Heavy bleeding – using >2 pads/hour for 2+ hours
3. Foul-smelling discharge
4. High fever

Do these pills affect future pregnancies?

No. These pills wash out in 24 hours and have no effect on future pregnancies.

However, don’t get into the habit of using them repeatedly.

Important note:

Many females do urine pregnancy test at home after taking pills to check if abortion was complete.
This is wrong practice.

Beta HCG hormone takes 4 weeks to clear.
If you do the test before 4 weeks, it may still be positive.
Don’t panic. Either wait for 4 weeks or get a sonography at 15th day.
Urine test is not reliable to confirm completion.
